When I dyed my hair bright red, I joked about the “Little Mermaid realness” I was serving. After a year hiatus from performing, a producer asked me to revive my burlesque act. I had no idea what I wanted to do, but I joked about doing a Little Mermaid bit and it killed. So, I got to work on the costuming and started impersonating Ariel.

But the mermaid costume was only a jumping off point. I kept making burlesque costumes, including bras that were too beautiful to cover up. I’ve made several different styles, debuting them in a runway show and modeling them with a burlesque photographer. As a fat person, dressing in revealing, larger-than-life garments is so liberating to me.

What’s a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program - or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan - or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?

If you’re for women’s rights. If you’re tired of the femme fatale. If “Toddlers and Tiaras” makes you want to throw the remote at the TV. If you loved “Lord of the Flies” but found it dated. Try “Beauty Queens”. Libba Bray, author of the Gemma Doyle series and “Going Bovine” (which is also a great book), tackles the tricky topics of LGBT relationships, transgenders, forceful parents, and expectations of society in a clever, lighthearted way while still exposing the seriousness of the issues. With Adina, the sarcastic investigative journalist, Jennifer, the tough mechanic (who also happens to like girls), Petra, the enourmously tall girl with a secret, and Taylor, the brash Texan girl with an attitude as big as her state, Bray poses tough questions such as “What makes a girl a girl?” “Why do I spend thousands on beauty products I don’t need?” and “Where did I put my microfiber mascara?”

This book also deals with racism with the characters Shanti and Nicole, who are also main characters. (In fact, I would argue that they played a bigger role in the book then Jennifer, who I love, but whatever.)

For a book written by a white person, I was impressed with the way it discussed internalized racism and racial microaggressions. Hurrah for intersectional feminism!

Anyway, I love this book. Its tone is satirical and fun and light-hearted, but the dystopic setting sounds like something out of a modern-day 1984. It feels like the book sets itself up so that you underestimate it- beauty queens stranded on a desert island! what an idea- and then you realize that it’s actually making you think. It’s like the book itself, which is set up as ‘chick lit,’ and is therefore lighthearted fluff, is like a giant metaphor for internalized misogyny and patriarchal expectations of what it means to be a girl. Isn’t that great?

It’s my feminist dream book. You should read it.

I always enjoyed Libba Bray’s novels as a teenager, so I’m glad to hear that her feminism is intersectional. :) I’ll have to check it out!
